Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature Japanese artist, Koki Morimoto, in The Matrix of the Mind. The exhibition is scheduled to run from February 26, 2010 through March 19, 2010 (opening reception: Thursday, March 04, 2010).
In Koki Morimoto’s paintings, nature and human emotion converge. Inspired by life’s constant flux and the invisible anxieties that keep people from fully merging with the earth, Morimoto turns painted marks into conduits of organic energy. Just as life grows out of the ground and occupies the expanse between earth and sky, Morimoto’s marks grow out of the canvas and inhabit the precarious but beautiful space between body and soul. Morimoto handles his monochrome acrylics softly, embracing dramatic value shifts but veering away from any harsh lines that might upset his work’s ethereality. Paint is Morimoto’s tool and not his subject. Thus he continually works to transcend the medium, envisioning a place where physicality falls away and only the aura of infinity remains.
A graduate of Saga National University (1983), Morimoto has been exhibiting throughout Japan since the late 1970s. He continues to live and work in his native Hiroshima.
