Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, was rated the second best tourist spot all over the world in 2009. Edinburgh was next only to London in the recession-hit year, which in fact had turned out to be a very good year for all the people, companies and government organizations associated with Scotland tourism. The year witnessed Scotland winning two different kinds of accolades on the international level. In addition to being ranked the second best tourism spot, Edinburgh also got noted being voted the “most desirable city to live in the UK”, in a 2009 YouGov poll. The above ratings proved that Edinburgh’s tourism sector was indeed recession-proof in 2009 and delivered a noteworthy performance.

Edinburgh stood ahead of other major cities in Europe including Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Cardiff when it came to the number of hotel rooms sold out. Figures suggest that almost 80% of hotel rooms were sold in Edinburgh in the year to the end of November. The average value of rooms sold in Edinburgh was also second-highest in the whole of Britain, at £69.79, again second to London which topped the list at £102.76 a room.

In contrast to the national trend of occupancy slump which hit cities like Glasgow and Aberdeen, hotels in Edinburgh saw it increasing its occupancy rate by 1.2 per cent, according to travel site Travel Scotland. Playing host to the high profile NATO conference did do Edinburgh, its hospitality sector and Scotland’s tourism industry a great deal of good. The event which spanned several days saw most of the hotel rooms being booked by people who came to attend the conference.
