As of October 1, 2009, there will be a new law in effect for the state of Arizona. The bill known as HB2224 was passed in the last legislative session, meaning from October 1st and on, judges will be required to assign penalties for Arizona motorists who do not carry insurance. Previous statistics have shown that 87 percent of tickets issued because motorists had no insurance were dismissed or the fines for these tickets were reduced during court. However, the new law states that those who are caught without insurance will be required to pay fines. For the first offense, the fine will be around $720, which cannot be dismissed or waived. A second offense will result in a fine of around $970, which cannot be dismissed or waived, and if someone is caught a third time without carrying insurance, the fine will be about $1,200 as well as a one year license suspension. A third-time offender will also be required to carry SR-22 documentation.  Before this law was passed, many Arizona motorists who were caught without auto insurance would purchase insurance before the court date, show their “proof” of insurance at court, and proceed to cancel the coverage as soon as the ticket was dismissed or the fine was reduced or waived. Under this new law, that will not be possible, and Arizonans will be required to pay the fines if caught without carrying insurance.
