Marketing expert reveals how to check if your marketing is working

Everyone says marketing should be measured, but very few businesses do it. In part that’s because very few people know how. In a new article on SME marketing website Marketing Donut, expert Fiona Blades provides some suggestions for small business owners and managers who want to be sure they’re getting the best possible return on their investment.
Her ideas include:

• Using different phone numbers for press advertising. That way you can check the response you’re getting.
• Always asking customers how they found you.
• Asking customers why they chose you (specifically what appealed to them).
• Surveying people who received a specific promotion to find out their response, for example, did they receive the flyer? Did they recall the message?

“As you evaluate your marketing activity, you gain more and more market knowledge,” says Blades. “Your tests will show which media channels work best for your business. The evaluation will also reveal which customer groups are most responsive and which marketing messages are most powerful.

“Armed with this information, you can make your marketing even more effective every time.”
