Competition starts at cradle for Japanese kids
Many Japanese children begin studying for middle school exams around the fifth grade in hopes of being accepted by an elite school that will lead to the nation's best high schools and universities. For example, the K-12 private school attended by Yamashita's daughter has a solid record in placing its graduates in top Japanese universities. (San Francisco Chronicle)
