TRENTON -- Dawes Thomp son, a self-taught jazz guitarist who played Carnegie Hall and for many years sent telegram birthday greet ings to his hero, the legendary Louis Armstrong, died yesterday at the University Medical Center at Princeton after a brief illness. He was 84.
